The Bee Doesn’t Ask the Queen

As I stood watching the bees work their way through the wildflowers, it occurred to me that none of them seemed uncertain about what to do next. They moved with purpose from bloom to bloom, gathering what they needed before returning to the hive. It made me smile because I realized not one of them was stopping to ask the queen where to fly.

That isn’t the queen’s job.

The hive works because every bee understands its role. There is a shared purpose, but there is also trust. Each bee has the information it needs to make thousands of small decisions throughout the day without waiting for permission or direction.

I couldn’t help but think about how different that is from many businesses.

I’ve met owners who are involved in nearly every decision their teams make. Questions pile up in their inbox. People wait outside their office. Progress slows because everyone is looking to one person for the next answer. Over time, that owner becomes the operating system of the business instead of the leader of it.

The irony is that most of these owners never intended to build that kind of company. They hired talented people. They wanted leaders around them. Yet little by little, they answered one more question, approved one more decision, and solved one more problem until the team learned that the safest path was simply to ask.

Nature offers a different picture.

The strength of the hive isn’t that the queen makes every decision. Its strength comes from thousands of small decisions being made confidently by the bees that are closest to the work.

The businesses that grow well often look the same. Everyone understands the mission. Everyone knows where they’re headed. More importantly, people understand the boundaries within which they can make decisions on their own.

Leadership isn’t about becoming the answer to every question.

It’s about creating an environment where fewer questions need to be asked.

Nature knew long before we did.
